changed the way Americans lived, worked, played, but perhaps of greatest significance, how they fought. Historians tend to classify the American Civil War as either the last Napoleonic War
or the first modern war. The use of weapons, fighting techniques and military strategies that were used by the French emperor during his territorial conquests served as a blueprint
for the conduct of war during the early-to-mid-nineteenth century. The Civil War, at least on the surface, appeared to be no different. After all, most of its generals
and commanders had been educated at West Point, which had a curriculum that was modeled after the Napoleon-influenced LEcole Polytechnique of France (Dowdey 11). The war was initially envisioned
in Napoleonic terms, but the generals on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line "who had been trained to think like Napoleon came face to face with military situations that the
emperor had never dreamt of" (Marino Attack and Destroy: Lee, Napoleon and the Civil War). During Napoleonic wars, troops had to stay close together, and because of the primitive
weaponry, needed to get within a hundred yards of the enemy in order to successfully launch an attack, which meant casualties were limited (Vasile The Union Soldier, His Life and
Times: A Modern Interpretation of a 19th Century Experience). However, technological advancements came fast and furious, and as a result, the Civil War was fought not as a Napoleonic
war, but as the very first modern war, with many casualties, a harbinger of military conflict to come. The Civil War qualifies as the first modern war because it satisfies
