in terms of representing the nature or the character of an American. They both presented, in different ways, images and ideals that were possessed by many Americans in history. The
following paper examines the autobiographies of both men, comparing and contrasting, as they illustrate the American character, or the character of an American. American Character: Franklin and Crockett
Both men appear to have been men who were noble and possessed of a strong sense of morality in many respects. For example, in the case of Crockett he illustrates
a time in his life when his father owed someone money and asked Davy to go work that debt off. Crockett did as much but then quit the job because
it was less than desirable in relationship to the company: "The reason was, it was a place where a heap of bad company met to drink and gamble, and I
wanted to get away from them, for I knowd very well if I staid there, I should get a bad name, as nobody could be respectable that would live there"
(Crockett 45). In this one can see that Crockett held some values that were respectable and noble, not wishing to become a
man who could not be respected in some manner. In the case of Franklin one sees him, at a relatively early age, beginning to teach himself through reading. While he
had attended school, like Crockett, he felt lacking in a great deal of knowledge. Interestingly enough, he read a work on being a vegetarian and took to eliminating meat from
his diet which is clearly something that was not done during the middle of the 19th century for meat was a basic part of everyones diet.
