This paper discusses the ways in which American capitalism has both stabilized and destabilized consumerism and materialism, and then considers what might come after it. It considers that most of the systems suggested by experts are socialist in nature, and that this may be a reaction against the greed apparent in American capitalism. Discussion American capitalism is profit-oriented; focused almost entirely on the "bottom line." Things such as social programs and concern for employee welfare largely prove irrelevant in this model of consumerism. However, this model of American capitalism, which is really nothing more than unbridled greed, has a destabilizing effect on the economy and society. To take just one example, consider the international debt carried by the United States. That debt was projected to be $3 trillion by the end of 2003, and to grow exponentially.1 If this continues, liabilities will double again by approximately 2010, "taking the United States into banana republic territory."2 If this occurs, then at some point the U.S. will start losing foreign investment, who will start buying the euro instead, with the result that the "dollar will crash and interest rates will jerk upward in response."3 Such action will surely prove destabilizing. American capitalism impacts consumerism and materialism in another way, by lulling Americans into a false sense that American productivity is as high as ever, and that things are going well. The truth is that "Europes growth in productivity outstripped the United States during the 1990s.
