meditation and chanting, have made its way into mainstream America. This is evidenced by the fact that most Americans are familiar with the term Zen. They are also closely aligned
with meditation. In fact, the concept of meditation is aligned with Western medical practices today. Doctors recommended meditation and biofeedback for example to help people cope with life. Such modes
of thinking and acting can help one to lower blood pressure. These things also have an overall positive effect on the body. Still, it is important to remember that Buddhism
is more than the sum of its parts. It is more than a philosophy. It is in fact an Eastern religion. In general, Buddhism had a late start in America.
Because it was not a religion that had God at its center, it was construed as something that did not necessarily fit the category of being a religion (Oxtoby, 2002).
In respect to Buddhism in North America in general, much has come from the Mayahana tradition (2002). Many are perhaps more familiar with the term Zen. This is because Zen
had become quite popular in the United States early on. What happened was that there was a large meeting called Worlds Parliament of Religions that was held in Chicago in
1893 (2002). One buddhist monk from this sect, and his translator, did make an impact on Americans (2002). Zen was considered to be the primary import and most popular sect
