In fact, many people came to the United States only to find themselves stuck and without much opportunity, struggling to stay alive and feed their families. And, there have been times when the United States essentially refused people, particular people or cultures, to immigrate the nation. Still, like a legendary myth, the nation is often called the land of opportunity. The following paper examines this ideal and argues that America is, and has long been, a land of opportunity for many people. America the Land of Opportunity? When one looks at the history of the United States, looking back at colonial and pre-colonial days, it is very clear that the nation was founded on an ideal of being the land of opportunity. The first settlers came to this land in order to avoid persecution, in order to find economic success, freedom, and in order to find religious freedom. It was, in the beginning, very much a land of opportunity, although also a land of harsh and dangerous realities. Freedom, or opportunity, clearly came with a cost in the beginning. At the same time America was not a land of opportunity for those individuals who had not immigrated or migrated here. For the Native Americans it was their land, their home, and it may well have possessed opportunities prior to the arrival of the settlers, but after that it ceased to become a land of opportunity for most Native cultures. Likewise, later in history, the United States was not a land of opportunity for the Africans who were brought to the United States as slaves.
