have struggled through their lives in one way or another. For whatever reason, they are both men who find themselves on the outskirts of the American Dream. With August Wilsons
play we have Troy, an African American man who is restricted from being a real success because of his color and race. In Millers play we have Willy, a man
who has been ignorantly deceived by the American Dream and thus discovers he is a failure. The following paper examines, individually, the attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of Troy and Willy
as it involves America. Fences In Wilsons play we have, as mentioned, a man named Troy. Troys dream was to play professional baseball as a youth. He could not
do so because he was an African American. It was not until Troy was past his prime that African Americans were allowed into the field of professional baseball. As such
his life was essentially filled with compromises and sacrifices. His life, however, was baseball. At one point in the play he is talking with his wife, trying to make
her understand why he has been having an affair with another woman. At the same time he is illustrating how he feels about America, what his experiences have been, and
what he believes to be truth. He tells her, "Maybe I come into the world backwards, I dont know. But you born with two strikes on you before you come
to the plate. You got to guard it closely...Everything lined up against you" (Wilson 69). These simple words illustrate a great deal about the life that Troy has led,
the assumptions he possesses, and the attitudes he has about the society around him. We see that he feels just being born African American is a very powerfully oppressive reality.
