West Airlines was founded at a time that industry analysts and certainly competitors believed to be the worst time possible for yet another upstart to enter the competitive Southwest US market. Southwest Airlines itself had had much difficulty in simply getting off the ground after facing literally years of opposition from what CEO Herb Kelleher still refers to as the "gang of seven," the large and established airlines of the US. That yet another airline serving the same area had any hope at all was more than a simple stretch of the imagination. Get off the ground it did, however, competing in the area as no other active airline could. America West flew only Boeing 737s as did Southwest, but America Wests were newer. Their newness was attractive to passengers of course, but they likely were also more efficient in their operation than were Southwests fleet of older Boeing 737s. Neither of the two offered any other aircraft model or configuration - Southwest determined long ago that the limited space of the 737 was a reasonable tradeoff for avoiding the need to hire pilots of varying licensure and capabilities. America West likely took a cue from that reasoning as well. All other airlines serving America Wests chosen markets were more varied in their equipment use, and therefore in their need to ensure various qualifications of its pilots. Competitors such as American and Delta offered greater in-air service for passengers, but they also were unable to match the fares of either America West or Southwest in the markets that all four airlines were serving.
