women who knew she always wanted to fly, from her childhood, but she was a woman who clearly made history. Many would argue that her mysterious disappearance made her more
famous than she would have been but the truth is that she contributed to the struggles of women in the aviation industry. The following paper examines her life and contributions.
Amelia Earhart "Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Her grandparents raised her during her early childhood. From the age of ten, she lived
with her mother and father" (Acepilots.com, 2008). She and her younger sister experienced somewhat difficult times, it seems, as their father was an alcoholic and they often spent many months
out of school. But, they were both young girls who loved learning and were intelligent (Sahlman, 2007). She was apparently a woman who loved and was interested in many
things. She, at one point, was a nurse and then joined efforts with WWI as a nurse and then became a social worker, teaching children to read (Sahlman, 2007). It
was when she was at a local air show that she paid $1.00 for a ride and was forever hooked on flying (Sahlman, 2007). But, in the beginning it was
simply a hobby, although she actually bought a plane. It was in 1928 that she was approached by Captain Hilton H. Railey who asked "her to join pilots Wilmer Stultz
and Louis Gordon on a flight from America to England" (Stahlman, 2007). She was only a passenger during this flight and yet she got incredible media coverage for being the
first woman to go across the ocean on a plane (Stahlman, 2007). This flight essentially changed her life because she gained notoriety
