"is known primarily for paintings of reclining nudes." (Strickland 133). This particular painting is not a nude and is a painting of a man. It is a man whom
Modigliani knew. "Manuel Humbert (1890-1975) was a Spanish painter of landscapes and was a friend of Modigliani."2 In better understanding the painting,
and the particular style utilized in the painting, it is relevant to note some of the history of Modiglianis life and times. This si because he was very much a
man of his time, a time when, "There seemed great hope in the new 20th century; still then, in 1902, a century that gave promise of a golden age, merging
science and freer governments."3 Another author illustrates the same power of that turn of the century in history by stating that, "As the century began, Montmartre and Montparnasse faced each
other from afar: two hills which would be the birthplaces of the worlds of yesterday and today."4 In essence, it was a time of great change, and surely a time
of great change in the world of art. His early work, in the first decade of the 20th century was influenced by many
