is less than two pages long, a young infantryman is crouched beside a trail in Vietnam; hes about to throw a hand grenade and kill a Viet Cong soldier. The primary emotion he feels is one of terror and although a reader might expect such a reaction in this situation, the terror is not fear for his own life, but for what hes about to do. OBrien shows readers a portrait of a young man who doesnt want to do what hes about to do, who was brought by chance to this time and place and who performs almost on autopilot, as it were: "... I did not hate the young man; I did not see him as the enemy; I did not ponder issues of morality or politics or military duty ... I was terrified. There were no thoughts about killing. The grenade was to make him go away - just evaporate - and I leaned back and felt my mind go empty and then felt it fill up again" (OBrien). By the time he has these thoughts hes already thrown the grenade and killed the young man; the thing eating at him is that it probably wasnt necessary: "It was not a matter of live or die. There was no real peril. Almost certainly the young man would have passed by. And it will always be that way" (OBrien). In other words, no matter how many times he replays the scene in his mind, the Viet Cong will always be just a young man in black who walked down the wrong trail one morning.
