break down in a variety of ways (Huang, et al, 2004). Medical practitioners are challenged with the task of analyzing the mechanisms of gait and using observations of how people
walk to aid in diagnosis (Huang, et al, 2004). The Emory Functional Ambulation Profile (E-FAP) is an instrument that health practitioners frequently use to evaluate gait progress in rehabilitation.
This exploration of how the E-FAP can be applied by nurses first of all explores the parameters of gait diagnosis in general. Normal Gait Abnormal gait results when pain,
paralysis or damage to tissue occurs and decrease in motor control initiates a gait disorder (Huang, et al, 1999a). In order for practitioners to accurately assess a pathological gait, they
must first have concise knowledge of the characteristics of a normal gait in order to detect deviations (Huang, et al, 1999a). A normal gait requires the musculoskeletal system and the
nervous system function properly. The basic divisions of a gait cycle are "stance and swing" (Huang, et al, 1999a). The period during which the foot is in contact with a
surface is the "stance" phase and the swing phase of the gait commences when the foot is lifted until "the heel is placed down" (Huang, et al, 1999a). While the
individual is walking, the thorax rotates in "clockwise and counter-clockwise directions," which are "opposite the pelvic rotations" (Huang, et al, 1999a). Some individuals will have more rotation of the thorax,
while others will have more rotation in the pelvis (Huang, et al, 1999a). At each step, the pelvis descends a few degrees on the side of the non-weight-bearing, that
is, the swinging, leg (Huang, et al, 1999a). During the leg swing, the hip abductors of the weight-bearing leg contract, which prevents the pelvis descending to an excessive degree on
