and today, major motion pictures. The availability of gemstones is more prevalent today than ever before. A gemstone can be defined as a stone which is rare, has a
natural beauty and is resistant to fracture, abrasion and most types of chemical reactions. Amber is one of the many gemstones which have been popular for centuries for use
in rituals and to be worn as jewelry. ORIGIN OF AMBER Tree resin is an extremely remarkable substance. It was used by ancient Egyptians to preserve dead bodies (Werner, 2000).
Modern Greeks use it in the preservation of wine (Werner, 2000). In many places around the world, it is chewed like candy, made a part of paintings, and
may have been offered to the Christ child in the form of frankincense and myrrh (Werner, 2000). But most significantly, tree resin is a time machine. Millions of years
ago, many parts of the world were covered with large stands of forests. Some of these trees secreted a sticky, aromatic resin which filled the crevices in the trees
and in so doing; this oozing substance trapped all kinds of debris such as seeds, feathers, insect and leaves. As time pasted and the geological processes occurred, the forests
became buried. The sticky resin became hard and formed a warm, golden colored gemstone, now known as amber. Authentic amber is the fossilized resin of ancient trees which
has formed through the natural process of polymerization of the original organic compounds (Aber, 2005). The amber which we see in the world today is somewhere in the range
of 30-90 million years old (Aber, 2005). It is uncertain how amber act as a preservative (Werner, 2000). It has a complicated chemistry which has never been synthesized in a
