Sufi, and at one time, Sunni Arabs (believers in Sufi faith) controlled the administration of Baghdad when it was an Ottoman province up until the government of Iraq was assumed
by Saddam Hussein (Fromkin 132). Because Baghdad, and therefore Iraq, was controlled by Husseins Shiite and Baath partners, Sunnis did not fare well before and after the Persian Gulf War
in 1991 because of their relationship to the Christian Kurds in both proximity and in religious practice. The Kurds were responsible for making ties with the United States that brought
about the Gulf War. Before the United States reentered Iraq in 2002, Sunnis were persecuted by the Hussein regime, suffering both torture
and genocide. This is why Sunnis support the latest war in Iraq, "Operation Iraqi Freedom." For us, it is our only way to survive. And yet, Falluja, a city of
more than half a million people and a center of Sunni nationalism (Pfaff), is the basis of many of the continued U.S. attacks because Saddam Hussein and his forces chose
to flee to Falluja. So, the Sunni battle for freedom continues and it is difficult for many to decide whether to support the U.S. in its continued occupation, I am
more fortunate because I, a Sunni Muslim, have been asked to become an ambassador for Iraq under the new interim government and can assist in the transformation of Iraq. My
