years ago, an Amazon customer found a replacement for the fourth volume of a five-volume set of books, and found a new one for a much lower price at one of Amazons affiliated sellers. The customer purchased the lower-priced volume, receiving when promised not the item ordered, but rather a duplicate copy of one of the other volumes of the collection already in his possession. Contacting both Amazon and the seller, the customer was told that no, there was no problem on their end, it must be that the customer was unfamiliar with clicking a mouse button or determining just what it was that he wanted from the beginning. Further investigation revealed that links traveled to unintended places and items, but the customer was still left with an expensive, unwanted item. Another experience for this same customer was that he began an order for an item that Amazon claimed to be in stock. On the final checkout page, however, the customer was notified that the item was backordered and would not be delivered for several weeks. The items page still listed the item as being in stock. The customer abandoned Amazon. Back-End Improvements After nine years of operation, Amazon finally has achieved some profitable quarters but still has not completed a single profitable year. Originally seeking to be a virtual company carrying no inventory of its own (Gruppo, 2000), Amazon abandoned that plan shortly after beginning operations. Updating web pages became crushingly oppressive as Amazons business grew, however, leading to situations such as the stock-out purchase attempt above.
