Its initial success led to massive expansions over the years. Amazon.com began operations in July 1995 by Jeff Bezos who remains CEO. Bezos had incorporated the e-store in 1994 in the state of Washington and did so again in Delaware in 1996. The IPO (initial public offering) was made in May 1997, the stock is listed the Nasdaq Global Select Market (Amazon.com FAQs, 2011). Amazon has operations in North America, Europe, and Asia. They employ more than 51,300 people across the world (Amazon.com FAQs, 2011). Amazons organizational structure is functional. The company identifies several functional areas. Software Development is crucial to Amazon; they employ software development engineers, technical program managers, test engineers, and user-interface experts. These employees all work in teams throughout the company. The platforms they develop are used by more than 152 million Amazon customer accounts, more than 2 million seller accounts, and hundreds of thousands of external developers (Amazon.com, Inside, 2011). The retail product management and merchandizing unit consists of product managers, buyers, designers, and merchandisers who develop and launch new products across the world (Amazon.com FAQs, 2011). The Information Technology team is comprised of database, system, and networking experts who build scalable districted systems with tetrabyte-sized databases along with the infrastructure to reliably handle the millions of transactions (Amazon.com FAQs, 2011).
