dementias are due to the latter. Alzheimers is "associated with diffuse neuron injury and death, with characteristic pathologic findings of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles" (Sloan, 1998) and Sloan also
notes that sufferers exhibit a progressive decline in various types of function, both in regard to cognition and to their ability to lead a normal life.
The average duration of Alzheimers is ten years, although this varies considerably: in some individuals, the decline from a slight memory loss to total dependency can
take place in a matter of months. There is a wide range of aberrant behaviors associated with the disease: Sloan comments that these can vary from mild (such as repeated
questioning due to memory loss) or more severe, including physical violence. Changes in the brain tissue result in a progressive and irreversible
decline in which the individual loses memory and cognitive function, requires round-the-clock care and supervision, and eventually passes into a vegetative state prior to death. It is not
yet known whether there is a single form of Alzheimers or a number of different types: Sloan states that some physicians maintain that there are distinct subtypes of the condition,
such as Lewy body disease, whereas others are of the opinion that all subtypes are variants of the same standard form of the condition.
Sloan states that the etiology of the condition is not yet fully understood: however, he also notes that it has been established that the 42-amino-acid fragment
of beta-amyloid precursor protein is an essential element in the pathogenesis of senile plaques, characteristic of the condition, and that overproduction of this protein is found in Alzheimers.
