our nations elderly. The disease typically results in the slow loss of memory, personality, and eventually all cognitive function (Lemonick and Park-Mankato, 2001). Scientists now accept the fact
that some individuals have a greater chance of being impacted by Alzheimers disease than others. Those who have a history of the disease in their families have a certain
genetic risk while those who have suffered from either a stroke or a head injury at some point in their past see their chances increased as well (Lemonick and Park-Mankato,
2001). Alzheimers seems to be less common in well-educated individuals that remain mentally and socially connected into their elderly years. A number of interventions are made in trying
to lessen the impacts of this devastating disease. These interventions range from pharmaceutical to physical, the latter of which include an innovative approach to Alzheimer therapy. That approach
is therapeutic recreation. Etiology of Alzheimers While the
specific causative agents in Alzheimers are yet to be discovered, the disease is associated with the massive death of neuronal cells (Marx, 2001). Current theory suggest that the disease
initiates the internal cell-death programs which exists in neuronal cells (Marx, 2001). Cells consequently die through the process of apoptosis (Marx, 2001). The cells shrink, their
DNA fragments, and protein-digesting enzymes activate (Marx, 2001). Impacts
Alzheimers disease can have a dramatic adverse impact on all aspects of memory formation and the cognitive process in general. For individuals with Alzheimers Disease activities
