unexpected insights. This paper will examine a beloved film, "The Wizard of Oz," in terms of Altmans definitions of the Fairytale Musical. The Fairytale Musical According to
Richard Altman, the Fairytale Musical is all about sex: sex as battle, sex as sex, or sex as adventure (p. ix). Its important to realize that sex in
this context is almost never physical intimacy (though it can be); instead it can be understood as a mechanism that uses at least a quasi-sexual implication to "play on the
sensibilities of the audience" (Fairy Tale Musical, 2000). It is an "avenue for playfulness" rather than a heated sexual coupling that delineates "sex" in these films (Fairy Tale Musical,
2000). Lets look at these three types of sex. "Sex as sex" is self-explanatory. "Sex as battle" refers to the ploy in which the two main
characters meet and start to squabble. We know theyre going to get together at the end, but we enjoy watching them fight along the way. Finally, "sex as
adventure" would seem to fit those films in which were not sure of the way the two leads feel about each other, but which hold out the possibility that they
will end up together, after they beat the bad guys. "The Wizard of Oz" Does "The Wizard of Oz" fit well into any of the three categories of sex
