"lyrical parable" set in a "fertile, mountain-ringed valley in the Karoo." Considered to be "coloreds" under the apartheid code, the play features three characters: the Author, Abraam Jonkers and his
granddaughter Veronica. The time is the present and a stage direction indicates that the role of the Author and Abraam Jonkers should be played by the same actor; however, the
play primarily focuses on Veronica and her efforts to carve a life for herself in the new South Africa that differs from the past. In portraying Veronicas story, Fugard pictures
a strong young woman who has the courage to come to grips with the opportunities offered in the new South Africa because she had the nurturing and love offered by
her grandfather. Veronica is 17-year-old and rapidly approaching adulthood. She was rescued and brought back to the Jonkers farm after Abraams daughter Caroline died giving birth to her in
"faraway Johannesburg" ("Valley Song"). From infancy, Veronica has loved to sing, inventing her own songs. Up till now, she has sung only for her grandfather and in the church
choir. However, she ahs peered through neighbors windows and caught glimpses of singers on television, realizing that her talent could take her far from the rural life of the family
farm ("Valley Song"). While Veronica has not begrudged her labor on the farm-she has performed these tasks "joyfully, singing as she does them"-she does not want a life of cooking
