for students in terms of dropping out are failing classes, poor attendance, and behavioral issues. Something needs to be done to improve high school graduation rates. Different alternatives to high school education have been implemented over the last three decades. Magnet school were implemented in the late 1960s and early 1970s to bring about racial integration. The first one was McCarver Elementary in Tacoma, Washington which invited any student who lived anywhere in the city to attend (Rossell, 2005). The next one was William Monroe Trotter School in Boston. The premise was simple-attract white students from across the city to enter a predominantly Black school for specific curriculum programs, like technology or performing art (Rossell, 2005). This idea took off with the federal government funding these schools. It was the implementation of choice but that did not take off in the South until the 1980s (Rossell, 2005). Because the magnet school is different than the regular high school, theoretically, it is an alternative school. An alternative school is defined as any school that is operated as a school and that offers a different program than the regular high school (Lewis, 2009). It could focus on outdoor education, performing arts, technology, or science, for instance. Magnet schools also have a focus. How these schools are actually structured and implemented differs from district to district and from state to state because they must adhere to educational laws and regulations within the state. Alternative high schools, including magnet schools have been found to be very effective in keeping high school students in school. Many surveys reveal that the most important outcome of the high school is for all students to achieve high academic standards regardless of demographics (Portland Public Schools, 2010).
