utilization of alternative forms of fuel is imperative given both the environmental and political state of the world. The world as we know it could not exist without fuel
to run our modes of transportation and mechanisms of manufacture. Fuel, or at least the energy that it generates, is even a necessary component in our communication networks.
Typically when we think of energy we think of petroleum products and electricity. In reality there are other types, i.e. alternatives, of energy. Alternative energy forms important because
they are renewable. Petroleum based energy forms, in contrast, are not renewable. They are, in fact, limited in both their existence and their availability.
Traditional Fuels and Their Limitations There are three primary types of traditional
fuels. These are petroleum (oil), natural gas, and coal. Each is limited in terms of how much is available on the earth. Each contributes vast amounts of
pollutants to our atmosphere. Whether we are burning coal, petroleum products or natural gas we flood the environment with toxins that can be hazardous to human health.
As might be expected, the US uses far more petroleum based products than it does renewable energy sources. Consuming approximately twenty
million barrels of petroleum daily, the US is one of the most energy intensive countries in the world yet we satisfy very little of our energy requirements domestically (Kasoff, 2007).
Although we produce eight million barrels of petroleum a day (Kasoff, 2007), we import an estimated thirteen million barrels of petroleum daily (Roberts, 2008). Alternative energy forms are
