example. There are several others. In fact, there is solar, water and geothermal energy that have been viewed as alternatives to oil or natural gas. Alternative energy sources are considered to be both "renewable and ecologically safe." ("energy, " 1998). Perhaps the most significant alternative energy source is water, but others are wind, the sun, and "heat trapped in the Earths crust" that is also called geothermal energy (1998). Geothermal energy in fact, as reported by the Geothermal Energy Association, says that this type of energy could actually fulfill 8.3% of the globes demand for electricity ("Geothermal," 1999). That is, this can be the case if the new technologies utilizing underground reservoirs, that contain hot water, are deployed (1999). While a good form of alternative energy, there are many more forms to be discussed and while many think of alternative sources utilized in respect to housing, there is a drive to create a smart car that will not guzzle expensive and environmentally harmful gasoline. In fact, not too long ago, President Bush supported the creation of a hydrogen-powered car and even proposed $1.2 (Lynn, 2003, p.15) billion to create such an automobile. The car will be free of pollution as it will rely on hydrogen and oxygen to create the fuel that will produce just water and not exhaust fumes (2003). With the use of existent technology, hydrogen is easily extracted from water (2003). Electricity that is created by solar panels for example, or wind turbines, are utilized in order to split the hydrogen atoms from the oxygen atoms as they exist in water (2003). Hydrogen in such a scenario is recombined with the oxygen in the fuel cells, and then has the ability to release electrons which can ...
