is a limited natural resource and one which is not distributed equally throughout the world, makes it imperative that we find suitable alternative fuels. One such fuel is found
in what is referred to as fuel cells. Fuel cells are essentially a large battery, a battery which in conjunction with an electric motor can power an automobile.
Fuel cells hold the tremendous potential to give our economy a leg up in a time when dependence on Middle Eastern oil is no longer feasible. Perhaps even more
importantly, fuel cells offer a much needed alternative to the environmental destruction we see all around us and which can be attributed to a large degree to pollution from the
family automobile. One of the major contributors to air pollution is the family automobile. This one technological accomplishment, more so than anything
else serves to prevent us from living in a sustainable world. In this nation alone the cost of transportation on our roadways is estimated at $726 billion (Martin, 1996).
This cost can be broken down into seven components: accidents, congestion, air pollution, land use, energy, noisy pollution, and tax subsidies for driving (Martin, 1996). Of the
total, air pollution demands $66 billion, land use $65 billion, and noise pollution $20 billion (Martin, 1996). Fuel cells offer alternatives for these costs.
Nitrogen, the basic component of the fuel cell, is easily obtainable through the electrolysis of water or, with the use of a fuel reformer, through the conversion of
petroleum based fuels such as methane, natural gas, or gasoline into hydrogen gas. While the process of producing nitrogen is associated with some environmental contamination, the use of fuel
