surroundings. Jerrys brother is worried and has suggested that Jerry consider moving to a nursing home, which is an idea that Jerry adamantly resists. Jerrys brother is considering going
to court to obtain legal guardianship over Jerry. As a service provider who knows the Jerry and the detail of this case, the following advice is offered to Jerrys brother
concerning alternatives to nursing home care or guardianship. Rather than a nursing home, Jerrys brother should considered an assisted-living facility (ALF). The increase in ALFs has been fueled by the
demand for cost-effective alternatives to nursing home care and the assisted living industry is increasing at a growth rate of 15 to 20 percent per year (Cummings, 2002). ALFs are
not licensed as nursing homes, but offer supportive and health care services--scheduled and unscheduled--for elderly individuals who require help with their daily activities (Cummings, 2002). Not only do ALFs
provide elders with needed assistance with daily living, but they do so cost effectively. The average rate for an assisted living is $71 per day, while a nursing home room
runs $127 on average (Cummings, 2002). The goal of the ALF is to help senior citizens maintain as much independence as possible within a home-like environment (Cummings, 2002). ALFs generally
offer three prepared meals per day, a 24-hour staff and housekeeping services (Cummings, 2002). The majority also provide assistance with taking medications and also assistance with some of the activities
