Acme Foods is a manufacturer of processed packaged foods for the retail market. Currently it is focusing on the development of packaged refrigerated lunch kits for adults, targeting working adults in offices and manufacturing settings. Acme is an OBM (original brand manufacturer) that supplies outsourced product development and production for national brands as well. The Situation As a contract manufacturer, Acme is not free to use any contract-specific processes or packaging options in its own brands. It does provide product development services for several of its client companies, however, and of course it is free to use any process it has developed. The market potential for Acmes new product is not particularly well defined, but it is estimated that the potential market exists in a size of several million workers. Acmes ultimate goal is to gain a one percent share of the market of suppliers of prepared lunch-specific foods. The significance of time to market in this niche of retail food is not as great as it could be - and is - in other industries, but it still is crucial to the success of Acmes product. Lunchables(r) have been available for years, and many Lunchables(r) customers will pick up several of the kits when purchasing Lunchables(r) for their children. Some adults will choose Lunchables(r) for themselves on occasion, but Lunchables(r) products, with juice drinks or M&Ms(r) included, directly target the childrens market.
