The ancient philosophers all had commentary about the nature and role of government, and none more than Plato. In his Republic, Plato presented the ideas that centuries later would
be embodied in a short battleground speech. The discourse that required volumes to set forth Abraham Lincoln was able to summarize in only a few short sentences. The
most notable of these sentences in his Gettysburg Address states that government exists "of the people, by the people and for the people."
The principles underlying the Constitution of the United States have evolved over the years and in large part are based on the philosophies of John Locke and others.
The framers of the Constitution understood well that times would change, that there would be progress and that the Constitution needed to be a living document that could serve the
needs of those future generations. Toward this end, they used language narrow enough to convey specific meaning, but also broad enough that the Constitution would never become an anachronistic
artifact of the countrys early existence. They strove to ensure that the Constitution would serve the people of the United States for all time.
The result is that laws can be interpreted in a variety of ways, depending on circumstances and depending on our place in history. It is for
