Art Nouveau movement. What this statement leaves out is that Mucha was, throughout his career, a source for incredibly beauty that served to enrich the course of public life. He
was born in 1860 in southern Moravia (an area in what is now the Czech Republic but was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the late Victorian period). With these
rural roots, he was deeply influenced by folk art and his home environment imbued Mucha early on with an intense spirituality that marked his character and influenced his art (Johnston,
2004). Muchas life as a struggling artist in Paris in the early 1890s changed suddenly when Mucha happened to go into a print shop just as the owner received
a commission to produce a poster to advertise a play starring Sarah Bernhardt, the popular actress of that era. Within two weeks, Mucha produced the poster, "Gismonda," which was an
immediate success. This posters interesting shape, subtle coloring and exquisite workmanship seemed to connect with a "Byzantine richness" that was completely unique. Soon, it was widely recognized that this poster
signaled that a "largely unknown artist from a remote part of the world had delivered a new artistic style to the citizens of Paris" (Johnston, 2004). The success of
"Gismonda" led to long-term association between the Mucha and Sarah Bernhardt, as he produced not only posters for the actress, but also costume designs, jewelry, and set designs. Mucha also
continued to receive commissions from Campenois, the owner of the print shop where his successful career began. For Campenois, Mucha produced numerous panneaux decoratifs, which were "illustrated posters on high-quality
