be noted that although the gators sank the ship, they refrained from eating the sailors, all except one particularly irritating officer who had threatened to shoot them; we might feel that in his case, he had it coming. The theme of a story is the "glue" that holds it together. In this case, the theme is the struggle of man against nature. The alligators are living in peace and content, until man intrudes into their domain. At first, they are frightened, but then they start to fight back. The conflict between the alligators and the men escalates, as each side brings in heavier reinforcements, until finally the conflict breaks into open warfare. In the end, however, nature triumphs and man is driven away, except those manmade things that can co-exist with nature (the little steamboat) remain. The setting of the story is the Para?a River in South America (an actual location). A little research reveals that the Para?a River basin is the second largest in the world, and that it is largely rainforest, which means that the ecological system is very important. Thus the conflict between men and alligators has consequences for the entire world. Also, the setting is wild-its the jungle, and that reminds the reader that there are still places on the planet where nature is more important than man and his machines, and where nature actually "knows best" and should be left alone. The characteristics of the story include the language and the structure. The language is very simple and direct. The writer uses words that presumably alligators would use, and since we wouldnt expect them to be very gifted with language, they dont use long words. Their sentences are short and to the point; in some places they sound like human children: "Thats the talk! Lets ...
