TEACHING SAFETY AT THE WORKPLACE In many cases, safety training is a legal requirement and has to be conducted at least on a monthly basis. Because organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) in the United States and government safety programs in other countries as well, require periodic safety meeting to apprise employees of safety factors on the job, Toolbox Talks was formed. Toolbox Talks are informal safety meetings that outline safety instructions that are geared toward the particular industry and occupation of those in the audience (NSCA 2002). The objective of Toolbox Talks is not so much to explain what to do if an accident occurs, as it is to talk on the actual prevention of hazards and safety concerns on the job. The intent is to prevent an accident before it happens. Normally given by "a supervisor, a health and safety representative, the member of a joint health and safety committee, a safety officer or someone with similar duties" (NSCA 2002, PG), Toolbox Talks exist in order to ensure that employees understand that those they work for are concerned about them and their safety, and to advise them of potential hazards that could occur while they are performing the duties necessary to their particular job (NSCA 2002).
