pollen, or refrain from eating certain foods, its also possible that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can cause allergic reactions (Vartan, 2006). Genetically modified food is produced when genes from one
plant or animal are inserted into another; the question arises whether someone allergic to the inserted gene would be allergic to the modified food (Vartan, 2006). That is, if a
GMO tomato includes a fish gene, and a person is allergic to fish, will they also be allergic to the tomato? (Vartan, 2006). While some scientists claim this isnt possible,
others arent so sure (Vartan, 2006). Thus far, at least, there havent been any "widespread documented allergies" to the GMO crops - corn, canola and soy - that are most
commonly modified. However, a study of farmworkers in 1999 "who worked with bioengineered corn found elevated levels of proteins that were related to known allergens in their blood" (Vartan, 2006,
p. 40). These workers showed a "higher than normal skin irritation, asthma and "rhinitus" (runny noses) - all classic allergic reactions" (Vartan, 2006, p. 40). The tests on these individuals
were never repeated so it cannot be proven conclusively that GMOs were a factor in their allergies (Vartan, 2006). However, tests run on mice that had "ingested genetically modified corn
found increased immune responses when compared to traditional corn" (Vartan, 2006, p. 40). This certainly suggests a connection between GMOs and allergies. In Australia, a 2005 study discovered that "a
gene from a bean that was inserted into pea plants (to make them resistant to the pea weevil) caused an immune response in mice" (Vartan, 2006, p. 40). The gene
