the errors and possible evils that she sees. She feels she has been perhaps, appointed by God to conduct herself in a manner that shows truth, or the possible truth, to others. However, in her role as the self-appointed moral police she is ignoring her own evil and her own sins. In short, Jacksons tale is one that argues the old adage of not trying to help others get the splinters out of their eyes until you have taken the log out of your own. In the following paper we examine the character of Miss Strangeworth as it illustrates this moralistic fact. The Possibility of Evil and Mrs. Strangeworth We watch through Jacksons story as Miss Strangeworth focuses on her life, her familys accomplishments, and her importance to the community. Miss Strangeworth is a woman who "knows" she is important. She does not merely think she is an asset to the community, but knows that the community would be nothing without her and her family. In these respects Miss Strangeworth is essentially nothing in that she has accomplished nothing in her life. She is a woman who lives in a house built by her ancestors, uses items made or purchased by her ancestors. For example, she notes the rugs that her mother and her grandmother made in her house that was built by the family. She, herself, never seems to come across anything which she has contributed to the house or its surrounding environment. She is, in essence, living off the name of her family. She does nothing but tend the garden originally created by her ancestors, tends the roses that her grandmother and mother planted.
