familiar with the name Allan Pinkerton, and of those who are aware of who he was, only a small percentage of those individuals are aware of the fact that he
played a pivotal role in the history of the political arena of the United States Government. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1819, Pinkertons father was a sergeant in the police
force in Scotland. However, Allan decided to become a barrel maker or better known as a cooper. Because of political turmoil in Scotland at that time, he and his
family moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1842. It was there that he decided to go into police work, and he was appointed as the first detective in the city
of Chicago. Although he worked for the city, he established his own private detective agency which became known as The Pinkerton National Detective Agency. Because of his dedication
to detective work, he became well known in the community, solving many high profile cases. Some of his successes included capturing a gang of counterfeiters, recovering large amounts of
stolen money, and capturing some leading criminals of the day, such as members of the train robbing Dalton gang. In addition, he was hired by the United States Post
