this paper.] Bob Woodward had been on staff at the Washington Post for less than a year when the break-in at the Watergate happened.1 During that time, he had distinguished
himself as an excellent investigative reporter, getting the facts and turning in the story far more quickly than his colleagues.2 In 1972, Woodward was involved investigating corruption in the District
of Columbia police department. In the process of this investigation, he was drawn into the political war waging between President Nixon and the FBI.3 Bernstein joined the staff at the
Washington Post in 1966.4 When "Muffin" Mattingly and her boyfriend killed her father, it was Bernstein who was given the assignment to find out everything he could about Mattingly.5 It
was perfect for him because he knew the town and he was good with people. One former Post editor commented that: "Bob was not a good writer. Others have
said English is a second language to Bob. Carl was the writer; Bob did the digging." It was a beautiful Saturday morning when the Post got wind that something was
happening at the Watergate Hotel. Eight journalists worked on the story the first day, including Woodward and Bernstein. It was only Woodward and Bernstein who followed up on Sunday morning
These two young reporters, Woodward was 29, Bernstein was 28, came from vastly different backgrounds and had different experiences in the business. Bernstein had 12 years experience, Woodward
