soldiers, but those are rare today. That may be in fact because unlike times past, war is not hell anymore. Still, people are drawn to films such as Saving Private
Ryan and All Quiet on the Western Front simply because they express the human side of war. All Quiet on the Western Front is an older but expressive work
that captures the problem of war through the eyes of its characters. For example, one part conveys feelings associated with the suspense and fear consistent with wartime violence: "At last
it grows quiet. The fire has lifted over us and is now dropping on the reserves. We risk a look. Red rockets shoot up to the sky. Apparently theres an
attack coming. Where we are it is still quiet. I sit up and shake the recruit by the shoulder. "All over, kid! Its all right this time." He looks round
him dazedly. "Youll get used to it soon," I tell him" (Remarque 62). Here, the idea that the relentless struggle foisted upon a young person can be torturous is shown.
The fact that indeed the boy will get used to being in mortal danger on a daily basis is troubling, but is that how life in war really is? What
is war like? Is it more like the scenes depicted in Saving Private Ryan that shows the ravages of World War II or similar to the Remarque novel that depicts
the horror of the first world war? Perhaps reality is more like the stories which emanated from the Vietnam era, and the film Born on the Fourth of July. But
