words. It is the story of oppression and the struggles of an African American man following the Civil War and the struggles of a man who sought righteous conditions. A
relatively simple man, Shaw was also a man who happened upon situations, possessed of an inherently noble nature, and seemed to rise above difficulties in his pursuits. The following paper
examines and analyzes this book in relationship to life following the Civil War for Shaw, the ordeals he had to overcome, and in relationship to the style of writing in
Rosengartens book. All Gods Dangers In the beginning of his book, prior to utilizing the words and images presented by Shaw, he notes the following: "This big book
is the autobiography of an illiterate man. It is the story of a black tenant farmer from east-central Alabama who grew up in the society of former slaves and slaveholders
and reached maturity during the advent of segregation law. For years he labored under many rulings, just like the other Negro, that I knowed was injurious to man and displeasin
to God" (Rosengarten Preface). From this one can see that his life, the time period in which he lived, was specific. He
was very connected to a slave culture yet also grew up in a land that was supposedly more free in relationship to the African American. Shaw states, ""Had to do
whatever the white man directed em to do, couldnt voice their hearts desire. That was the way of life that I was born and raised into" (Rosengarten 8). This indicates
that although he grew up in a time when slavery was no longer a social and political institution, he and his people were still at the mercy of the white
