It is very much an artistic film that presents the viewer with memorable and sometimes shocking scenes that seem to burn into ones mind. In essence, the film is filled
with mis en scenes that offer powerful images. The following paper examines one particular scene and also examines its importance within the film as a whole. The scene depicted is
one wherein the leading womans son has just been killed. All About My Mother The scene, as mentioned, that is under discussion is the scene wherein the son
of the leading character dies. It is the scene that sets the story in motion in many ways and serves as a symbolic end to one aspect of the main
character and the beginning of a new journey. In order to first better understand the set up of this particular scene we look at the story prior to this event
or scene. Manuela is the main character. She is a woman who is almost 40 and she is a nurse at an organ transplant clinic. She is played by
Cecilia Roth. "Manuela is the mother of Esteban (Eloy Azor?n), half her age and just turning eighteen" (Vorndam, 2004). At the beginning of the film it is his birthday
and their interactions clearly let us know that the two are very good friends. In fact, we quickly see that Esteban is perhaps the only real person in Manuelas life.
He asks her, on his birthday, if she will finally tell him about his father. She refuses because she feels that the time is not quite right. "In reality, she
has run away from her past and never wants to look back" (Vorndam, 2004). The death of her son that will come, however, will force her to confront that past
