The blood test that measures ALP is conducted only after the individual as fasted for at least ten hours, inasmuch as myriad medications influence the presence and concentration of alkaline phosphatase, not the least of which includes antibiotics, narcotics, methyldopa, propranolol, cortisone, allopurinol, tricyclic antidepressants, chlorpromazine, oral contraceptives as in estrogens and progestins, oral anti-inflammatory analgesics, male hormones, tranquilizer, some antiarthritic drugs and oral antidiabetics (Datta, 2005). This test is performed in order to determine the presence of: * liver disease (jaundice-yellowing of the skin and eyes) * the cause of liver disease * parathyroid disease * Vitamin D deficiency * the cause of pain in the upper abdomen * bone diseases * patients on medications that may be harmful to the liver * liver production (used in conjunction with other tests) (Datta, 2005) Inasmuch as 20 to 140 IU/L is considered the normal value, the variance is quite wide to accommodate the higher levels children have due to their bone growth still occurring; in fact, it is not uncommon for some kids to read 500 IU/L when experiencing one of many growth spurts.
