A group of young rugby players, most of whom were teenagers, experienced a plane crash in the Andes mountains. Read recreates the story and the events which transpired following the
crash as the individuals either died or survived for a total of 80 days. In the following paper we present a review of Reads book, arguing that it is a
disturbing story, but one that is powerful and one that truly captures the human spirit in all its phases. Alive The story begins with a group of young
rugby players, some of their family, and others who just happen to be on the plane. The plane crashes in the Andes mountains and leaves some survivors to endure at
least 80 days of isolation and hunger. In the end there were only sixteen left, out of the original 45 passengers and crew. This is, to begin with, an incredible
story of survival. It is a story that details the emotions and thoughts and actions of teenagers left alone and afraid. We first note, perhaps, that these are incredibly
young individuals who are left with no resources whatsoever. They begin with food and some drink, but that quickly runs out and they are high in the Andes, where no
food is to be had. We could, in reality, have a story that would read like "Lord of the Flies" when we consider these were relatively young individuals in incredibly
frightening and unbelievable circumstances. But, as Read slowly reveals, these teenagers maintained most of their sanity. They worked together as a team for the most part, cooperating and hoping that
they would eventually be rescued or find a way out. They did not fall into an existence of chaos and fights, but rather worked as one as best as they
