The firm has a number of published values, with the C.A.F.E based on four concepts; product quality, economic accountability, social responsibility and environmental leadership, there is a general mission statement " To inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time" and an environmental mission statement which states that "Starbucks is committed to a role of environmental leadership in all facets of our business" (Starbucks, 2010), Other espoused and published values include a commitment to employees who are referred to as partners and seen as strategically important within the business and the management of the supply chain with ethical sourcing and supplier ethical agreements. However, many cynical commentators may argue that for many organizations the issue of values tends to reflect on rhetoric market needs rather than reinvent. Therefore, in order to assess whether or not the company supercritical we can look at the practices and strategies adopted by the organization to see how they are aligned with the espoused values. Starbucks appears keen to portray itself as an ethical company, the purchase of Ethos for $7.7 million in 2005 a company that supplies bottled water is one example. It is estimated by 2010 Ethos, a firm which funds the finding of safe drinking water projects run by non profit making organizations as a key element of its strategy will be able to donate $10 million a year to these projects (FSB, 2007). In 2004 there was the launch of Starbucks Coffee Agronomy Company S.R.L, this is a firm that has been set up as a wholly owned subsidiary of Starbucks located in Costa Rica; this is a farmer support centre (Starbucks, 2005).
