Beys preoccupation with controlling Samias entire existence is both grand and far-reaching; that she is indoctrinated into a society where women are deemed inferior serves as the reason why she does not stand up for herself (Ouzgane). Rifaat utilizes setting, irony and conflict to illustrate the harsh reality of their marriage, as well as to show readers the extreme narrow-mindedness of a society that fails to recognize women as just as worthy of respect as their male counterparts. Rifaat presents characters who benignly accept prescribed norms of female behaviour in both marriage and sexuality...Thus, Rifaat does not only speak for Muslim women in Egypt but, in fact, reveals herself to be an advocate of gender justice (Nkealah). Bey pits his wife against her own values every chance he gets as a demonstration of the storys conflict, not the least of which includes goading her to lie to everyone they know in order to advance their own social agenda. Perhaps the most despicable falsehood he forces her to tell is one he does not even know for sure is the truth, but it does not matter to him just as long as he can maintain he position of self-imposed eminence. Because Samia cannot remember where she left her very valuable ring, she mistakenly speaks out loud that Gazia the servant was in the room at about the time she realized it was missing. Without giving this accusation the least bit of thought, Bey immediately accuses Gazia of thievery and demands she tells where she hid the ring. Of course she has no answer because she did not steal it, but Bey will believe nothing she says and has her whisked off by the police. ...
