no secret that Hawthorne hated the narrow-minded Puritan bigots he wrote about; its also no secret that he admired his heroine, Hester Prynne, for standing up to them and living
her life among them, refusing to let them shame her. But at the heart of the story is the unacknowledged relationship between her and Dimmesdale, the father of her child.
He is a coward, and never publicly acknowledges Pearl as his daughter. We can thus argue that he and Hester are alienated from one another, despite the fact that they
were once lovers and very close. But they are kept apart because they "suffer from an acute consciousness of their moral roles" (Shear and Bloom, 2004, p. 81). If they
were not so aware of what was expected of them, they would be able to ignore or overturn societys judgment of them, and live their lives as they please. But
they cannot, and so they are trapped. The idea of alienation is particularly evident in another of Hawthornes stories, The Ministers Black Veil. Here the alienation is give a concrete
symbol, the black veil that the minister wears. The intriguing thing about the story is that unlike, say, the Phantom of the Opera, who wears a mask to hide his
deformity, there is nothing wrong with the Reverend Hoopers face. He simply appears before his congregation one Sunday morning wearing the veil. It unnerves them so much that some women
have to leave; when it becomes clear that he intends to wear the veil until he dies, the townspeople try to dissuade him, and his fianc?, Elizabeth, begs him to
