paper compares and contrasts the two characters. Discussion Alice and Wendy are similar in many ways: they are both young girls; both fall asleep and dream of wonderful
adventures; and both wake up (presumably) more mature and changed by their visions. They are in fact girls on the brink of womanhood, and they explore the frightening but
intriguing world of adulthood in similar ways. Wendy, however, is much more sexually overt than Alice. Lets take Alice first. Alice is reading and talking to her cat
Dinah on a warm summers day; she falls asleep, though of course she doesnt realize it. She spots a White Rabbit and follows him, falling down the rabbit hole
into an entirely new world. While there, she meets many bizarre characters, and finally has to confront the Red Queen in order to escape and return to her own
world. The fact that Alice moves from her real world into the dream world can be seen as a metaphor for Alice moving from one state (childhood) to another (adulthood).
Her growth toward maturity is quite strikingly revealed in the various episodes in which foodstuffs make her grow or shrink, possibly indicating her desire to grow (up) and her
equally strong reluctance to leave the comforts of childhood behind. Her childishness is seen in the fact that she seems powerless to resist being pulled into various unsavory adventures
(the Tea Party, for example) and simply goes along with whatever she is told; she also exhibits panic at being left alone in these strange situations, just as a small
child does when it loses a parent in a strange place. It isnt until she grows up that she is able to leave Wonderland: "Who cares for you?
