Alice Walker, in many of her works portrays powerful individuals each with a distinct personality and character. She herself credits her feminist ideology to the fact that her childhood
was filled with the sexist notions of her father and bothers (Beacon Book of Essays by contemporary American Women 64(1)). Most of her books and stories are about men and
women and their relationships with the women taking the upper hand in terms of spirituality and longing. The men are generally not very intelligent or kind and the women deep
and full of passion. In "The Color Purple" and her collection of short stories "In Love and Trouble "there are many examples of relationships and the views the characters have
on the opposite sex. How they treat each other and what they desire, or require, from one another are different but at the same time can seem quite similar.
In "the Color Purple" there are many varied relationships between men and women. There is Celie and Mr.
______ also known as Albert, Shug and Mr. _____, Shug and he husband Grady, and Sofia and Harper to name the obvious. The most prominent relationship is the one between
Celie and Mr.______. Although his first name is Andrew Celie titles him thus therefore he will remain Mr. _______ for the analysis.
