American people believe, and rightly so, that they have the right to say and feel whatever they wish. In terms of publishing such thoughts, words or feelings, there are regulations
in terms of what is accepted in mainstream society and what is not. For example pornography is not sold to individuals under the age of 18, and freedoms that are
deemed harmful to society as a whole are not accepted or allowed. Freedom of the press and freedom of literature is a field of consideration that has always been
at the forefront of censorship and the rights of Americans and as such many books, most of which are classics today, have been banned for one reason or another. The
following paper looks at the controversy and conditions of the banning of Alice Walkers book "The Color Purple." Alice Walker: The Color Purple: Banned Walkers novel "was challenged
but retained in a California school district due to controversial ideas about race, religion, and sexuality. The novel was challenged but retained in an Oregon high school in 1995 due
to inappropriate language [and] graphic sexual scenes" (Alibris, 2006). Another author indicates that, "The Color Purple has been excoriated and challenged for several issues" (Alice Walker: censored, 2006). And, for
anyone who has read the book, there are some disturbing scenes in the book that are so powerfully written and detailed that the reader is perhaps depressed for the characters,
or simply shocked. But, the novel is a very real depiction of the struggles and the book is not intended to be a "sexual" book or a book about nothing
more than cursing or bad language. That is perhaps what makes it not worthy of censoring in the eyes of the public. It is of a great value, and more
