cause of her people, the African American people. It is a book that looks at the Civil Rights Movement from many perspectives, perspectives that are not always pleasant. It is
a very powerful and realistic look at the struggles of both whites and blacks. The following paper examines and analyzes Walkers work. Meridian When we imagine the Civil Rights
Movement we envision a place and time when the African American community, along with pockets of the white community, worked together to try to find balance, to try to find
a place where people had equal rights. We often envision a righteous and fairly simple struggle. However, Walkers novel presents us with very intricate and deep illustrations of people and
thus presents us with an image of a time and place that was not simple or even all that pleasant. Throughout Walkers novel we see many whites and blacks essentially
losing much of their identity as they struggle for the equal rights. We see the anger rise, the bitterness take the place of equality and we see people with good
intentions take negative paths, or merely give up and find where they can best make a living. Most of the people that Walker discusses in her book lose their vision
along the way. They have ideals, perhaps because it was popular at the time, and then "grow up." Or they are individuals with grand ideals who take a wrong turn
somewhere and become bitter, angry, and essentially end up in a place where they are no longer fighting for peaceful equality but for violence and oppression. The main character,
Meridian, is a woman who struggles through all of this, seeking to find the most righteous position in battling against all odds. She watches as people lose their passion, give
