Easter, October, 2012 -properly! Alice Walkers short story "Everyday Use" is a profoundly moving parable that centers around values and what
is valuable. Through the voice of Mama, a large, heavy, hard-working black woman, living on a farm in the rural countryside, readers are introduced to her daughters, Dee and Maggie.
Dee has left her home, traveling to Augusta to go to school on money raised by her family and the church. Maggie remained home, scarred both mentally and physically by
the fire that destroyed their house. During the course of the narrative, Mama has an epiphany of understanding and causes her to appreciate and value Maggie. These values are the
heart and point of the narrative. As the story opens, Mama is anticipating a visit from Dee. She relates a detailed dream she had of being on television, looking
totally different from the way she looks in real life, which is the "way my daughter would want me to be" (Walker 1087). This conveys Mamas anxiety over Dees visit
and the fact that she is intimidated by Dee who has never approved of her mother, her family or where she came from. Maggie is just as anxious as her
mother. Mama compares her posture and walk to that of a lame animal and says that she reminds her of a dog that has been "run over by come careless
person," as she walks with "chin to chest, eyes on the ground, feet in shuffle" (Walker 1088). Images of and references to animals pervade Mamas descriptions of Maggie (Gruesser 183).
