Heart. Discussion The Genre: The book is a collection of short stories, all of them dealing with interpersonal relationships. The Plot and Theme: The novel cannot truly be said to
have a plot, since it is a collection of stories. However, they all seem to touch on similar themes: how to move on, even after a terrible loss; and the
difficulty of establishing a real connection with another human being. In these stories, the loss is not necessarily physical death, but the death of a relationship. Most critics agree
that the first story in the book, "To My Young Husband," is the best. In it, Walker writes a letter to her former husband, reminiscing about their life together, and
wondering how two people who were so very much in love could have come to the point where they not only went through a bitter divorce, but now no longer
truly communicate, even though they talk: "A few days ago I went to see the little house on R. Street where we were so happy. Before traveling back to Mississippi
I had not thought much about it. ... Whenever I did remember the house it was vibrant, filled with warmth and light" (Walker). But the memory of the house is
misleading, because the author also says that much of the time they lived there she was angry, hopeless and in despair (Walker). The writer is a black woman married to
a white man at the beginning of the Civil Rights era, confronting bigotry and hatred every day (Walker). They do not even feel safe in their own home: in their
bedroom was "Our rifle a silent sentry in the corner" (Walker). Walker draws a very intimate and nuanced portrait of the marriage, of the way they used to
