of two very divergent societies. A large part of Patiences message is about survival -- a state of mental, physical, spiritual, political, social
and religious survival. By hanging on to the realities of her past, the author proves better equipped to withstand the unwelcome - and often unwitting - existence of despair
and disheartenment that surrounded her. Indeed, one can readily argue that she is on a mission to find her historical self through her literary characters, in spite of the
fact that everything she had come to know as being representational of her heritage was playing out as distant memories having been infiltrated, damaged and callously disregarded to at least
some degree. "At the heart of our national narrative is an American paradox: a democracy that declared all men equal, while using the enslavement and oppression of one people
