aura and a way in which she is captivated by reality, something that few can claim. She is compelled to channel what she observes into poetry and Meneseteung is a
representation of the quintessential poem. It is her lifes work, her lifes challenge. To say it is inconsequential is to miss the meaning of this story. The role of
story telling is also vital to the creation of the Munro story, but clearly, artistic creation is at the forefront of the work. For centuries, people have looked at writers
and artists and asked whether or not they were mad. Stories are legendary from Vincent Van Gogh who purportedly cut off his ear to give to a prostitute to
the depression to sift through the Hemingway family to the numerous others who have for one reason or another been misunderstood. With Meneseteung, the mystery to surround artistic creation is
blown apart, then dissected in order to explain to the average reader exactly what is going on in the mind of the writer, and in this case, a poet. Munro
creates in the Roth character a compelling model who claims she only writes because her fingers were too clumsy for crocheting, as if to negate the real drive. Perhaps Munro
is portraying the denial or the modesty that many in the field possess. But the story expounds on such themes and at the end, the reader clearly has a greater
understanding of artistic creation. This is not the only story in the anthology to explore the writing process and in fact, Munro creates food for thought about writers and writing
