the entirety of English history (Mapp 3). An examination of his reign shows that he was a most remarkable sovereign. In one short generation, he took his country from the throes of barbarian conquest to civilization (Mapp 3). At that time, England was subjected to repeat marauding attacks from Vikings, typically Danes. In order to defend England, he fathered a system of national defense and earned the title of being the greatest naval architect in Europe (Mapp 3). Additionally, he created a distinctive style of public architecture; promulgated a famous code of laws; and founded the oldest continuous literary "tradition in the occident" (Mapp 3-4). These accomplishments by themselves would earn Alfred a distinguished place in history. But, in addition to these accomplishments, Alfred also realized that importance of learning and education during a time when such an attitude was extraordinary. He originated a system of public education and produced translations of classical works for the first time into vernacular Anglo-Saxon. The educational aims of Alfred the Great for England are rather unique in the annals of medieval history. Only Charlemagne in the previous century comes close to sharing Alfreds perspective on education and learning. His educational program was not a merely incidental afterthought of a wise kings domestic policy, but rather it was central to his over purpose--"as much a part of the battle against the heathen as the campaigns against the Danes" (Loyn 52). It was a measure of Alfreds vision as a ruler that he recognized the necessity of Christian education to be an essential component of the success of a Christian monarchy (Loyn 52).
